GENERAL INFORMATION:

On initial contact, in or outbound, advise the controller WHO you are, WHERE you are, WHAT you want to do, and what ATIS you have received- (Example: "Boeing Tower, Cessna 12345, North Vashon inbound for touch and goes, with X-Ray" or, "Boeing Ground, Cessna 12345, Northeast parking for a Mercer Departure, with X-Ray').

Controllers at Boeing Tower have RADAR available and will issue traffic advisories on a WORKLOAD PERMITTING BASIS. This is an ADDITIONAL service provided to traffic in Boeing's airspace. Many departures are eager to change frequencies as soon as possible after takeoff to activate a VFR flight plan. When this is done they lose the benefits of traffic advisories in a very high density traffic area. Unless approved otherwise, you must maintain two-way radio contact with the tower until leaving the Boeing Delta airspace. You may activate your flight plan on the ground at Boeing Field with Seattle AFSS prior to departure. Contact Seattle Radio on 122.5 or 123.65.

CONGESTED VFR TRAFFIC AREAS:

EAST: In the vicinity of Mercer Island below 2,000 feet MSL. Watch for traffic in/out of BFI, RNT and float planes.

SOUTHEAST: In the vicinity of Southcenter Mall below 2,000 feet MSL. Watch for traffic in/out of SEA, BFI and RNT. There is also a helicopter training area south of I-405 below 1,000 feet MSL.

WEST: In the vicinity of the Fauntleroy Ferry Dock below 2,000 feet MSL watch for traffic in and out of SEA. In a south flow Sea-Tac arrivals cross directly over Boeing midfield at 1,900 feet MSL descending to approximately 1,200 feet MSL over Boeing's west downwind. Boeing's west traffic pattern altitude is 800 feet MSL to avoid this SEA traffic and the SEA Bravo & Delta airspace.

NORTHWEST: In the vicinity of the Kingdome, Space Needle, Lake Union, and North Elliot Bay. Many aircraft including float planes transition these areas for photo and sight seeing trips from the surface up to 1,800 feet MSL. IFR traffic crosses NOLLA (Pier 91) on the ILS at 2,200 feet MSL decending through Elliot Bay on final.

GENERAL: During weekday mornings and afternoons news media aircraft operate from 1,000 feet to 1,700 feet MSL in the vicinity of all area freeways and Lake Washington floating bridges. Helicopter traffic also operates at or below 500 feet MSL along the 1-5 freeway in and out of Boeing Field below the east and west traffic patterns.

DEPARTURE PROCEDURES - GENERAL:

After receiving taxi instructions, and when ready for departure, call the tower on the appropriate frequency. Move to the hold line, without blocking the intersection, and state WHO you are, WHERE you are, including Intersection), and your DIRECTION OF FLIGHT. (Example: "Boeing Tower Cessna 12345+ Runway 13 Right, at Alpha Niner, request Vashon Departure"). Crosswind turns prior to reaching the departure end of either runway must be approved by the tower. After departure there is no need to ask for a frequency change once you leave the Boeing Delta airspace. Avoid drifting over the parallel runway or the extended centerline of the parallel runway. Faster traffic may be departing the parallel runway and WILL overtake you. Caution Wake Turbulence. When "Cleared For Takeoff" the controller expects YOU to move onto the runway and depart with minimum delay. If you need a delay on the runway for any reason, request it prior TO TAXIING ONTO THE RUNWAY.

LOCAL VFR DEPARTURE PROCEDURES:

If you are familiar with the following procedures please request them when ready for departure, or simply state your direction of flight and the controller will issue appropriate instructions.

Vashon Departure: (South flow Only / Runways 13R/L) Depart Runway 13. Make a right downwind departure over or east of the Duwamish River, at or below 800 feet MSL until abeam the control tower. Then turn left, fly westbound below 1,100 feet MSL. Pass SOUTH OF the West Seattle Reservoir and proceed to the shoreline. Remain outside Seattle airspace.

Mercer Departure: (South Flow Only / Rwys 13R/L) Depart Runway 13, make a left turn to north Mercer Island over Seward Park. Remain outside Seattle and Renton airspace

Renton Departure: (South flow / Rwys 13R/L Landing At Renton) Depart straight out and contact Renton Tower two miles southeast of BFI. Do not enter a right base to Renton Runway I5 unless advised by Boeing or Renton Tower.

Renton Departure: (North Flow / Rwys 31L/R Landing At Renton) Depart on a right crosswind to Seward Park. Contact Renton Tower over Seward Park. NOTE: On initial contact advise Renton Tower you departed Boeing Field.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES:

On initial contact in bound, make any special requests, e.g., mid field base, long landing, or touch and goes. Make initial contact with the tower 7 to 10 miles from the airport and prior to entering the Boeing Delta airspace. Use the appropriate frequency; 118.3 east of runway 13R/31L centerline, or 120.6 west of runway 13R/31L centerline. This is true no matter which runway you plan to use for landing. If you are in a position for a straight in approach or zero degree entry to the downwind, call the tower on the appropriate frequency for the runway of intended landing. If the frequency is congested, DO NOT CONTINUE INBOUND to the airport until you have received inbound instructions from the tower.

PILOT RESPONSIBILITIES:

This publication was designed to assist you in understanding and complying with airspace requirements and describe local procedures when operating to / from BFI. These procedures will reduce frequency congestion, increase safety, and provide a common understanding of local procedures. Anytime you don't understand an instruction please ask the controller for clarification. Remember, a "Clearance" from SEA TRACON is required prior to entering Seattle's Bravo airspace, and "Two-Way" radio communications are required prior to entering the Boeing or Renton Delta airspace. Thanks For Being A "Boeing Field Flyer."
